After today the only teams that won’t have played are in the NESCAC, so the Division III football season will be in full swing.
I’ll be at St. John’s, where the No. 11 Johnnies host UW-Eau Claire. Keith McMillan is in Massachusetts, where Curry will play host to Widener. And you’ll be wherever you are, of course, so keep us up to date, even if it’s in front of your computer surfing through games. (That’s also one of my favorite places from which to track Division III football.)
We went through the other big games yesterday in the Triple Take, so I won’t repeat. But there are intriguing games in the Liberty League, especially, with Hobart traveling to Dickinson, Union hosting No. 8 Ithaca, and RPI opening its brand-new Division III football palace.
Elsewhere, I’ll be interested to see the results of “Air Raid vs. Wishbone” as McMurry hosts Austin College. DePauw’s tumultuous offseason finally comes to an end when the Tigers travel to Anderson. Could this year’s Augsburg/Wartburg game live up to the last two years? That seems hard to imagine, but it’s one of a handful of intriguing night games, along with McMurry/Austin, East Texas Baptist/Redlands, UW-Platteville/Dubuque, Buffalo State/St. John Fisher and even Carroll/Beloit.

Thanks – big news out of the Hobart camp is our leading rusher from 08 is not on today’s game day rusher. Not certain what it will mean for Hobart’s rushing attack against Dickinson today. Guess we’ll find out in about 10-15 minutes when the Statesmen and Red Devils kick-off in Carlisle.

It’s a gloomy day at Alumni Field in Union, New Jersey for Kean’s season opener against Delaware Valley. The Aggies opened last week with a 23-7 win over Johns Hopkins largely due to their running defense, but Kean brings a test of a different sort.
All eyes are on the Cougars running back Jason Gwaltney who began his college career at West Virginia, then transferred to Division II C.W. Post with a stop at Nassau County Community College. He is listed at six-foot and 240 pounds with a build that you don’t see often at Division III level. It’s been a long, bumpy road to Kean where he joins a good young quarterback and speedy backfield mate Jared Chunn.
If last week was the unofficial MAC-Centennial challenge, this week is the unofficial MAC-NJAC challenge. Keep an eye on Lycoming-Rowan and Wilkes-Montclair State.

Ralph, I was worried about a lack of offense this year. This may be a so so season for the Statesmen, which we are not accustomed to. Carnege Melon is no pushover, Susquehanna is good and then there’s always Union and RPI.
Union beat Hobart 24-3 back in 1992 and held Hobart to 3 in 1993. Those are the previous low scoring efforts for Hobart. (Hobart has had a redzone fumble and missed FG.)

Underway here at St. John’s, home opener against UW-Eau Claire. EC backed itself up at the 2-yard line after letting a punt bounce at the 25. Johnnies got a perfect roll out of it.
Statesmen, I trying to figure where Dickinson fits into the South Region ranking. I was surprised by the Dickinson-Grove City score, (52-47). This is a more respectable performance by the Red Devils.

Dickinson appears to be for real although Grove City is being beaten by CMU (at the moment) who were picked to finished 3rd in the UAA. Either Hobart just isn’t that good, or Dickinson will fulfill the pre-season predictions to compete for the top spot in the Centennial Conference and a NCAA bid.

Del Val’s Charles Squitiere intercepts Kean quarter Tom D’Ambrisi and returns it 90 yards for a touchdown to seal an Aggies’ victory, 30-17. Kean lost Jason Gwaltney (see above) to an injury late in the first half but came to life to make it much closer than the final score indicated. A one score game for the majority of the second half.
Monmouth led Lawrence 49-0 at the half. Tanney has 5 TD’s. 56-3 with 1 minute left in the 4th….game over 56-3. Scots move to 2-0.
Scots roll up 553 yards to just 85 for Lawrence! Not sure how the Vikings managed the FG…

a disappointing but very promising start for the WIAC teams as both Point and Eau Claire go into two top 25 teams home fields and almost come away with the win…even with a few mistakes…
great games for early in the season that should only make Point and Eau Claire better at the end of the year and in conference…
T_Unit14, I see it differently. Disappointing anyway you look at it for the WIAC. As the #7 team in the country, UWSP didn’t look for a moral victory against the barely in the top 25 team in the country, even if it’s on the road. They needed to win to justifiy their loftly pre-season ranking. Their poll drop should be significant. Eau Claire loses because they can’t kick an extra point at the end. Good strategy at the end to let SJU score to get the ball back, but couldn’t punch it in with 2 shots from the J’s 9 in the closing seconds. The loss doesn’t eliminate either from the playoffs, but to get in, they are both probably are going to have to beat UWW in conference – a tall and probably impossible task the way the Warhawks have started the season. Disappointing and not promising day for the WIAC!
