Game day from the madness

I’m in Naperville, Ill.; Keith McMillan is in Westerville, Ohio; John McGraw is in Geneva, N.Y.; and Frank Rossi is in Belton, Texas. And there are photographers elsewhere and of course, your eyes are everywhere.

Twelve weeks into the Division III football season, and while us Triple Takers were fairly unanimous with our first-round predictions, there are still lingering questions.

We all think Wheaton will win, but here’s what Trine has on its side. Trine has a 10-game home winning streak going and hasn’t lost at Shive Field since a 21-7 loss to Hope on Oct. 28, 2006. That’s another era in Trine/Tri-State football, to be sure.

We all picked Hardin-Simmons to lose to Mary Hardin-Baylor. I know I looked at the last meeting and took into account that Mary Hardin-Baylor is really banged up. But we all picked the home team to lose, and that’s a red flag. This game is too close to call, and I think our scores reflected that. That’s also why we sent a broadcast crew, since we think this is going to be a great game.

Plus, there’s the weather. It should hold scores down across the North Central and Mount Union bracket. Is it enough to prompt an upset? There aren’t many games being played on grass today, but the ball will still be affected.

We’ll update. You’ll update. It’ll be a great time. Madness on!

  1. End of third. As you can tel, I’m frustrated. CNU is 4-15-1 and 29 yds passing. There is 15 minutes left in game. Defense is playing a little better. Why go to your weakest part of the offense to try to get back into the game? I just don’t get it. Ogun is now up to 90 yards. Down only by 12.

  2. Ott forces three-and-out, takes the punt at midfield and on 3rd-and-17 at midfield, Rafferty throws a rope to Tanner McCormick for a 41-yard TD.

    24-21.

  3. Stellman gets picked off for the 3rd time this season… Sulo 30 yard TD run.

20-10 NCC. TMC missed the kickoff and has the ball on their own 8 yard line.

Now they are driving…. to the NCC 21

The Saints are moving the ball…but can’t have anymore mistakes.

  4. Pat’s partner is spot on… Wenger is a difference-maker. Allowing them to run the cover 2 behind him to defend the pass.

  5. 2 straight sacks by NCC after TMC got to the 21 yard line.

4th Down at the 35 yard line. NCC timeout. 1:27 left.

  6. This could be last quarterback with the ball in his hands.

Rupp rolls out, badly underthrows his reciever … Skips off Otterbein’s DB’s hands and right into Tony Gregory’s hands.

    28-24.

  7. Stellman’s pass is picked off at the 5 by Wenger. Just as good as a punt.

Sounds like he missed an open receiver and held it too long.

Sulo carries to the 15 with 1:08 left in the first half.

  8. UW-Whitewater forces a St. Johns fumble at midfield and the Warhawks recover with :55 to go in the half. Donavan completes some big passes to get to the SJU 1/4 yard line with :03 remaining. Coppage can’t run it in and the half ends with a 9-7 Warhawk lead.

  9. TMC’s db’s are playing badly. Franthorpe completion to the TMC 30.

Another 14 yard completion and NCC is in business about to blow this open with 43 seconds left.

  10. CNU D stopped W&J again. Offense drives but stalls on 26 yd line….missed a 4th and 4 conversion with an incomplete pass.

  11. all my comments are now saying “your comment is awaiting moderation”. can anyone see them or am I chatting with myself?

  12. intentional grounding with 23.5 seconds left. Franthorpe threw left-handed and ball didn’t reach the LOS. Possibly a big break.

Saints need to hold… 3rd down at 22.

INT at the goal line by Matt Clark… LB. TMC will run a play as they dodge a bullet.

    20-10 Halftime NCC

  13. cnu85 – I’m getting the same thing on longer posts. I’ve seen it happen before, too. Is anyone moderating/approving posts on gameday? Or should I try to keep my posts shorter to avoid the filter?

  14. Otterbein drove back down the field with a couple Jack Rafferty third-down conversions and a touch throw for the TD. 31-28 at 2:50 of the 3rd.

It’s basically a QB clinic all of a sudden, after points were hard to come by in the first half.

In fact as I typed this, Rupp hits Logan Deffner for a TD for the fourth time today … MISSED PAT, instead of 35-31 it’s 34-31 with 1:33 in the third.

    This game got WOW fast.

I see Ithaca and Curry are in a battle.

  15. I just approved 12 posts in moderation by several regular posters … not sure what put them there — there are certain triggers — but they should be showing to everyone now.

Here, the scoring hasn’t slowed one bit … Otterbein runs a halfback pass but the HB fumbles, Franklin recovers on the 20 and turns it into another TD.

41-31 at 0:51 mark. Rupp to Tony Gregory, his second of the day. Rupp’s 6th TD pass, I believe.

  16. Otterbein three-and-out and we’re still at the 0:22 mark.

Rupp getting rid of it much more quickly than before. Otterbein was getting DL pressure on Franklin pretty well.

    Quarter.

  17. This game just gets weirder.

Otterbein gets a three-and-out, blocks the punt and then the guy who scoops it has a fairly clear path down the sideline and stops … apparently the idea of “you can’t advance a something or other” popped into his head. The punt was blocked straight up in the air and was close to the line of scrimmage. Refs are deciding if if went over the LOS … either way Otterbein great field position, would not be surprised if they score a TD in the next 2 minutes 🙂

  18. CNU falls short yet again to W&J. Another late comeback comes up short. Down 35-17, CNU fights back to make it 35-29. Second half defense for CNU was outstanding. Good Luck to the Presidents!!

  19. TMC takes the 2nd half kickoff..

Will start on the 45 yard line.

The Saints miss the big-play ability of Kendall Owens (out with MCL).. Anthony Knott will be needed in this half also.

Collier fumble, recovered by TMC. 3rd and 4.

TMC is stopped and will punt.

They need a turnover to take back momentum on this drive.

  20. Levell Coppage finally gets a few good runs strung together but gets landed on and has an ankle injury. Hopefully nothing serious, he’s walking off the field under his own power.

    9-7 UWW 11:20 3rd Q

  21. stupid penalties, turnovers and db play have cost the Saints today.

NCC is already at their own 45.

NCC is averaging 9.8 yards a snap. Did I say we need a turnover?

Another long pass by Franthorpe and is in business again.

  22. Ha. Otterbein scores & trails 41-38. 12:49 left.

Aided by a very obvious pass int on a 3rd-and-8 completion.

Scoreless at the end of the 1st and all 14s at the half. No regrets about the game I picked, although I’m sure it’s not the only awesome one going on.

Ott KO out of bounds. Franklin only needs 60 yards to score again 🙂

  23. … and as I type that Antwan Anderson eludes the entire Johnny defense for a long TD run (about 45 yards).

Schebler PAT makes it 16-7 UWW with 11:10 to go in the 3rd Q

  24. boyington with int #8 on the season – hat trick for the senior free safety. hobart’s going to alliance.

  25. Rupp got sacked and had a 2nd-and-27. Two great catches later, the Grizzlies score.

5th TD catch for Logan Deffner, 7 TD passes for Rupp, I believe.

    11:10 left 🙂

  26. NCC with the ball on the 18..

illegal procedure on NCC. now on the 23..

Franthorpe pass complete to the 9.. 2nd and 1.

7 yard gain by NCC fullback to the 2. 1st and goal to go.

TMC holds on the next two plays. 3rd and goal from the 2.

SACK by Justin Smith and a HUGE penalty… unsportsmanlike conduct.

    1st and goal NCC– unreal
