One week from now

It’s 1:00 on a Saturday, and one week from this moment, 28 Division III football games will kick off as Division III football begins in full force for 2007.

Keith McMillan and I plan to take in two games on opening weekend, heading up to Union, N.J., to see what all the fuss — some of which we’ve made — is about with Kean as the Cougars host Merchant Marine on Friday night. Saturday we plan to be in Dover., Del., where we hope to make a similar assessment of North Carolina Wesleyan, the chic pick to win the USA South, as the Battling Bishops play at Wesley.

It’s our eighth season here at D3football.com. Kickoff 2007 appears to be another success, thanks to the writers, the coaches they interviewed and the fans who have bought into our premium season preview package. We have some new people and partnerships to introduce to you through the coming week as we get set for the opening games on Thursday night. Meanwhile, I have a lot of last-minute setup and writing to do, so I’ll have to keep this short.

Keith and I have already booked trips to Linfield for the Hardin-Simmons game on Sept. 15 and a DuPage County doubleheader of sorts in the Chicago area on Oct. 13. We have plans for Keith’s first trip to see St. John’s play in Collegeville that are formalized in intent but not yet booked, and Keith is getting his first taste of Texas thanks to the McMurry Athletic Foundation on Oct. 6.

  1. I’ll be at a game Saturday afternoon also but I look forward, as always, to coming home and seeing all the latest news on D3football.com!

Congrats on another fine Kickoff. Seemed like there was even more there this year.

  2. guys, congrats on the kickoff, it is great. i will be at the wesley game this saturday also, duh, and will look forward to meeting you guys. we will be tailgating as usual. we are looking forward to this season. the schedule is improved and wesley expects to have another fine season. see you on saturday.

  3. Yeah guys the Kickoff was fantastic! I can’t wait for the season to start! Us Union fans are hoping for some suprises this season with all the changes. I was watching the Dutchmen practice the other day and they looked pretty good! I am curious to see if this transfer from Villanova will win the job. I guess Audino was actively recruiting him before he went to Villanova. He looked strong on the field. Again, guys the Kickoff was fantastic and I appreciate all that you guys do! Thanks good luck to all the D3 teams this season (except RPI…just kidding)

  4. Regarding my comments yesterday I found out today that the QB race at Union is wide open between two or maybe even three players. Interesting. I’ll stop there because I know everyone in the D3 world is not dying to know the answer to Union’s QB battle, as a fan I just find it interesting and competetive. Also; question for others out there. I am a huge Chris Sharpe fan, after watching him dismantle many defenses last year i quickly came to respect this player and his teams offensive system. Will Chris Sharpe have the success he had last year this year? Will he have more or less? Any thoughts and why? I know they return a lot on Offense this year. Can he dominate the way he did?

  5. Ferrum may have lost a few key players on Offense, but they always seem to be able to run the ball. Their defense is a year older and they have Coach Adams back after a two year hiatus at Washington and Lee College. I wouldn’t be surprised if they finish the year in the top 3 in the conference. A few years ago they were not expected to do much and made the playoffs. They are much stronger than anyone is giving them credit for.

  6. Run, welcome back. Good to see a couple years have changed your perspective on Ferrum’s 2005 season, too. 🙂

  7. For the record,
It’s not my first taste of Texas … was there (with Pat) for UMHB-UWW last season. My first taste of Abilene though.

Washington & Lee is a University. We from the ODAC board know not to disrespect those crazy Generals’ academic standing.

Rowan at CNU is also still in consideration for me on Saturday. Pat and I might go our separate ways to get in double the game-seeing.

    FWIW.

  8. Linfield may have lost most of their offensive line but the committment from the whole team is strong. Off season workouts have been impressive. The offense will be explosive and the d will be in good shape and we finally have a kicker who can hit from anywhere. We will see you on the 15th – should be a great game. Go Cats!!!!

  9. Keith….make sure they take you to Joe Allen’s after the game for steak and ice cold longnecks. The rest of us (who will be at the HSU/UMHB game across town) will see you there after the game. It should be an interesting year in the ASC. A couple of new coaches and a 59 year old player.

You can’t make this stuff up…….

  10. NCW may the pre-season pick but CNU is the team to beat. I expect Ferrum be in the top half, top 3 actually at the end of this year. They have a chance to sneak up on a lot of people – maybe another 2006 season in the works?
