  2. Hmm, oddly enough, I was working on the same thing today. Here’s some extra tidbits on a couple players I thought were interesting:

Desmond, a 6-3, 245 pound tackle from Salinas (Calif.) High, was the Tri-County Athletic League offensive lineman of the year.

“The coaches like my get-off on the line,” Desmond told the Monterey County Herald. “They’re losing three starters. He (coach Jay Locey) told me I’d have a shot to start as a freshman. I thought that was cool.”

Fairhope High free safety Ryne Davison will attend Mississippi College on a scholarship package but is anticipating what the rest of us have heard about for about a year — Mississippi College moving down a level.

“It’s for leadership, honors and a whole bunch of scholarships,” Davison told the Mobile (Ala.) Register. “They are supposed to be moving up to Division II next year so we can get money if they move up.”

Davison holds a 3.9 GPA and scored a 23 on his ACT, according to the newspaper

  3. Emory & Henry also got a DT from Liberty County High School in Bristol,FL
    Matt Yancey 6’0 230

    25 Tackles
    14 tfl
    4 Sacks
    alos longsnaps
    2.98 GPA
    21 ACT

  4. Word is that Shenendoah Univ. is getting a nasty TE from NW Guilford in Greensboro, NC
    Kurt Geldner
    6’3”
    230 lbs.
    4.64-40 yd dash
    16 rec. for 639 yds.

  5. Trinity University (San Antonio) – Chris Baer, Shiner, TX

Shiner’s Chris Baer will continue his football career next season at Trinity University in San Antonio. Baer has accepted an academic scholarship to study engineering at the Division III school and is also expected to play running back for the Tigers.

Baer helped lead the Comanches to a perfect 16-0 record and the Texas Class 1A state championship with his performance at running back and linebacker, scoring 4 TD’s in the state championship game at Midwestern State stadium in Wichita Falls in late December.

The 6-foot, 200-pound Baer earned a number of honors during his senior season. He was selected as the Class 1A Player of the Year by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine; the Offensive Player of the Year and the co-Defensive Player of the Year on the Texas Sports Writers Association Class 1A All-State team, and the Most Valuable Player on the Victoria Advocate’s all-area team. He was selected to the All-State team for the third consecutive season.

In 2004, Baer rushed for 2,120 yards and 40 touchdowns, returned a kickoff for a touchdown in the state final and had 144 tackles and two interceptions. For his high school varsity career, Baer rushed for 5321 yards on 698 carries (7.6 avg), scored 81 touchdowns, threw 4 TD passes. At linebacker on defense, he racked up 266 tackles with 23 sacks, 6 interceptions, and 2 safeties.

In the spring, Baer played catcher for Shiner’s 2002 Class 1A state championship baseball team, and was selected as the Newcomer of the Year on the Victoria Advocate’s all-area team. Baer moved to center field in 2004 and Shiner won the 2004 Class 1A state championship again, where Baer was voted as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. He also advance to the Region IV track meet in the high jump four years in a row, clearing 6’2″ as a junior.

The Trinity Tigers have won the SCAC Conference championship for 12 consecutive years and qualified for the NCAA Division III playoffs for the past 8 years in a row. In 2002, the Tigers played in the NCAA D-III championship game, the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl.

(see http://www.baercom.com/chrisbaer/ for Baer’s statistics, and http://www.shinertx.com/shinerhs/va030805.htm or http://www.thevictoriaadvocate.com/sports/sports/story/2621123p-3039220c.html for newspaper story)

  6. Jonathan Nettles a junior from Southern California, has given a verbal to attend Louisiana College. Jonathan has three years of eligibility left and plans to finish his football career at LC. Currently Jonathan runs a 4.5 forty, has a vertical jump of 35 inches, bench presses 225 x 15, and is 6’3 220 lbs. Jonathan has also expressed interest in coach Armstrong and the rest of the coaching staff at Louisiana College.

  7. I heard that Wittenberg is getting Matt Maidlow a MLB from Madeira HS in Cincinnati. At 6-foot-3 235 Maidlow was ranked by rivals.com as a legitmite DI prospect, and I do know for a fact he held an offer from Ohio University, yet is was pulled once Frank Solich and co arrived in Athens. He was also rated as the 5th best linebacker prospect in Ohio by Ohio Football Recruiting News Magazine put out by rivals.com’s Bill Kruelic. If this turns out to be true Wittenberg just hit the jackpot, while the rest of teams in the NCAC may need to man up just a little bit more on the offensive front.

    SHS’ Cowboy becomes a Lynx

    Special to the Sentinel
    The Daily Sentinel

    Published May 23, 2005

Scottsboro fullback Garrett Estes will continue his football career at NCAA Div.III Rhodes College in Memphis next fall.

Estes, known as “Cowboy” to Scottsboro fans, committed to Rhodes on May 1 and will report to practice on August 15.

”I am very excited about the opportunity to play at the next level,” Estes said. “I liked the coaching staff, the city of Memphis, and the excellent academic reputation of Rhodes College.”

Rhodes is consistenly ranked among the nation’s top liberal arts college.

While NCAA Div. III programs do not offer athletic scholarships, Estes was awarded an academic grant from Rhodes, as well as an ROTC scholarship.

Estes is one of the most productive fullbacks in Scottsboro’s 88 year history.

He was only the 14th Wildcat to top 1000 rushing yards in a season. Estes is eighth all time in rushing yards and ranks fifth all-time in rushing attempts. He is fifth all-time in average yards per game and tenth all-time in rushing touchdowns.

”I owe any records and success I have had to the offensive linemen who have fought for me and a coaching staff who put their faith in me,” Estes said.

”I hope that I am able to honor them in the years to come as I continue my playing career.”

”Garrett’s father and I are very proud of his accomplishments and thank God for our many blessings,”Garrett’s mother Bobbie said. “We would like to thank Chris Haunschild and Joey Spivey for their many man hours and miles to the various colleges that were recruiting him.”

Former head coach and current athletic director Larry Morris had this to say about Estes.

”Garrett can best be described as a winner,” Morris said. “He was not the biggest, the strongest, or the fastest player on the team, but he was definitely one of the toughest,” Morris said.

”Garrett gives you every ounce of God-given ability on every play. Not only does he play hard, but he is truly a team player. He played fullback, quarterback, safety, extra-point holder and he was on almost every kicking team-to say the least, he was a versatile player.”

Not only did Morris comment on Garrett’s ability and durability, but also praised Estes for being a leader.

”As well as being an outstanding player, Garrett was a great leader on our team. His competitiveness and his intense desire to excel made teammates and opponents respect him as a football player. The qualities and characteristics that Garrett possesses are what will make him an asset to any team, because they are characteristics of a true winner,”Morris said.

Along with playing football, Estes wants to pursue a degree in large animal vetrinarian medicine.
