shame on the south region committee…rhodes has no business in those rankings
emory should be ahead of rhodes, and i think both methodist and maryville should be, as well…
here is how the three stack up
methodist: 46 SOS rank, .576 win %, .565/.538/.556 (owp, oowp, owp+oowp)
maryville: 62 SOS rank, .647 win %, .550/.551/.550
rhodes: 77 SOS rank, .575 win %, .539/.545/.541
maryville and emory both beat rhodes head to head, as well
the ONLY thing that rhodes has vs. maryville or methodist is proximity to usa stadium…hmmmm

emory actually LOST to rhodes, head to head, but it doesn’t change the fact that rhodes has no business in these rankings

Don’t forget Oglethorpe then:
53 SOS 10-19 .345 0.559 0.543 0.554
Someone said that is why they let humans make the decisions, not the computer.
Yes and travel may have a lot to do with it when it comes to $$$.
Also, even thought they may look at only the regional schedule, Rhodes played some really good out of region schedule, Marietta, Wooster, Heidelberg, Carthage and hung with them.

Marietta, Wooster and Heidelberg are all in-region games for Rhodes. But “hanging with” a team isn’t really part of the selection criteria. Margin of victory (or defeat) isn’t really considered unless you really need to dig into a common opponent scenario.

@scowbucker – you actually ignored the other primary criteria which i posted…oglethorpe wouldn’t be in this discussion because they have a sub .500 winning %
of the three schools i compared, rhodes is better than the others only in oowp (which is, in part, a product of having a significantly lower owp)

I believe UMW should be in the south mix also. Mary Washington is 10-3 vs conference champions. With PSU-Altoona still playing in their conference championship.

a question on owp – if a weak conference opponent is played 3 times, is the winning percentage counted only once? or 3 times?
i.e. Alvernia plays 3-29 Arcadia 3 times, and 9-25 Albright 3 times for 6 victories. They play 35-7 Kean once and 25-12 New Jersey once.
Is this calculated as WinPercentage for 2 good opponents against 2 not-so-good opponents, OR against 6 not-so-good opponents?
Author comment by Pat Coleman · May 10, 2011 at 12:08 am
It is counted once for every game the teams play against each other.

@a163dp – if you’re comparing umw vs. rhodes, i agree but record vs. conference champions is not part of the selection criteria (unless those conference champions are regionally ranked at some point)
when compared with methodist, emory and maryville (2 of whom are not ranked), i suspect that umw suffered because of their low sos – despite having a solid regional record (.641), their regional owp+oowp (ncaa) was just .532 and they are currently ranked 104th – m’ville (.647) and emory (.649) both have better in region records and substantially stronger sos (m’ville is ranked 58th with a .551 ncaa mark, emory is ranked 70th with a .544 ncaa mark and umw is ranked 104th with a .532 ncaa mark – methodist has a lower winning percentage (.576), but a tougher schedule (43rd/.557)
